Getting into the Flow

Updated: Jan 22, 2023

Hello! For my first blog post for my Data Visualization class, I have decided to follow FiveThirtyEight, FlowingData, and Visualizing Data.

The data visualization below hits very close to home, as I am from California and frequent droughts have plagued my home state since I was very young. I really liked how this chart was very clear and organized, as sometimes charts with lots of numbers and colors can feel very overwhelming. This one keeps it simple, taking the biggest and most important reservoir and showcasing a few key points (reservoir capacity, reservoir level over time, historical averages, etc.). I also appreciated the California map in the corner showing where the reservoirs are. It provides valuable context to certain data points, like the massive gap between Shasta and Pyramid Lake.
